About Design X Design
Design in its many manifestations forms an integral part of every culture. Civilizations evolve and attain their full potential because of it. Design based creative communities in India are witness to a fascinating churning, necessitating a search for a vision that may inform their evolution beyond – spanning education, profession and the industry. Thus, involving exposes, roundtables, exhibitions etc. Design X Design is a step in that direction.
The energy behind the design of a pin or a city being the same, this joint initiative of Alliance Francaise de Delhi and Studio IF is also geared towards raising levels of appreciation within and nurturing connections across various creative communities – architecture, urban/ landscape/ interior design, product/ industrial design, textile/ fashion design, graphic/ communication design etc. Local and global in outlook, it is directed at the initiated and the uninitiated alike.
About the D X D Expose’
A linking bimonthly two hour long activity involves sharing of high quality professional work of designers from Delhi and other cities of India, in a neutral, friendly and open environment . Each Expose’ generally consists of presentations made by two designers, each drawn from habitat design (architecture/urban/landscape/interior design) and non–habitat design (product / communication / apparel design ) respectively, culminating in an open discussion and Q & A.
About the Presenters
Swati Kalsi, Textile/ Fashion Designer
Swati Kalsi, a Textile and Fashion Designer, has worked with handcrafted textiles, for more than a decade in various capacities. Over the years, she has been noted; to have brought contemporary relevance to the time honoured handcrafted textiles of artisans, thereby pushing to create a basis for their livelihoods.
She engages with artisans in interactive creative processes, to enhance the artist in them, creating pieces of work, treading on the edge of design, craft and art. Over intriguing give and take and inconceivable twists and turns, emerges a unique design vocabulary that highlights the quirks and anomalies arising out of the process of creating.
Educated at NIFT Delhi and Domus Academy Milan, her work has been a part of Design, Textile and Fashion exhibitions/shows at galleries and museums like Devi Art Foundation, India, and Victoria & Albert Museum, London. It has also made space for itself in the homes and wardrobes of eminent national and international artists, collectors and connoisseurs.
She has been warmly noted by magazines like Vogue (India), Marie Claire (India), Verve(India) and felicitated by magazines like Elle (India) and Grazia (India) for craft revival and innovation in textiles respectively.
Shikha Jain, Conservation Architect
Shikha Jain has vast experience in cultural heritage of India that ranges from steering conservation projects for various state governments to national and international representations. She was Cultural Heritage expert from India for UNESCO World Heritage Committee and steered all matters related to World Heritage as Member Secretary, Advisory Committee on World Heritage to the Ministry of Culture during India’s elected term in the Committee from 2011-2015. As an international expert, she has advised the National Heritage Board, Singapore on the recently inscribed World Heritage Site of Singapore Botanic Gardens in 2015 and represented various UN forums. She is UNESCO Visiting Fellow at WII, Dehradun, a UNESCO Category 2 Centre for Asia-Pacific, Visiting Faculty for Urban Conservation in the Department of Urban Planning, School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi and an Adjunct Faculty, Centre for Heritage Management, Ahmedabad University.
Shikha graduated as an architect from SPA, Delhi and has a Masters in Preservation and Community Design from Kansas State University, USA along with a Doctorate in Architectural History from De Montfort University, UK. She is the director of DRONAH and chairperson of the DRONAH foundation. DRONAH (Development and Research Organization for Nature, Arts and Heritage) is a national level organization practicing in the field of heritage conservation in India since 2004. She has authored several publications on cultural heritage of Rajasthan and Haryana and, is the Chief Editor of the refereed Journal ‘Context: Built, Living and Natural’ published by DRONAH. Her most recent publications are Conserving Fortified Heritage, and Living Heritage of Mewar: Architecture of the City Palace, Udaipur.
Shikha Jain is also the State Convener of INTACH Haryana Chapter and member of National Committees under the Ministry of Culture. She is the Asia-Pacific Regional Coordinator for International Scientific Committee ICOFORT, ICOMOS, Paris (advisory body to UNESCO) and a consultant to UNESCO, New Delhi Office.
