Thierry Pécou (1965) initially studied piano at the Conservatoire National de Région de Paris before he went to the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique (CNSM) to study orchestration and composition. He was granted a scholarship to study at the Casa de Velázquez in Madrid. He was invited for several residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada between 1989 and 1997, and was in residence at the Casa de Velázquez in Madrid from 1997 until 1999.

When listening closely to Thierry’s work, one can actually follow his never-ending travels in time and around the globe. His major works, like Symphonie du Jaguar, Passeurs d’eau, Outre-Mémoire, L’Oiseau innumerable and Orquoy, show his interest in tribal cultures and cults, but also that he finds inspiration in ancient Chinese and Tibetan culture, or Greek mythology. In his most recent works Soleil rouge (concerto for trumpet and orchestra, premiere in February 2016) and Femme changeante cantate des Quatre Montagnes, the native North-American people – especially the Navajo and their healing rituals – are a strong source of inspiration.

Thierry is one of the few composers who actually performs himself. Solo, with his own works at the piano, in chamber ensembles, or as soloist with orchestra in his piano concertos. In 2009 he decided to found the Ensemble Variances to constitute a platform for encounters between contemporary creation and music of other traditions.

His refreshing musical vision was rewarded with a variety of awards and prizes:  the Prix Villa-Médicis Hors les Murs, Grand Prix de Composition Musicale of the Fondation Simone et Cino del Duca, Academy award from l’Académie des Beaux-Arts, the prize for best new music premiere 2010 from the Syndicat de la Critique Théâtre, Musique et Danse (French Critics’ Circle), the recording of his Symphonie du Jaguar was rewarded with the Grand Prix 2010 of the Académie Charles Cros and a Diapason d’Or, and yet another Diapason d’Or for the CD Tremendum (chamber music).

Thierry has been artist in residence in venues and institutions in his home country France and abroad.

His works are performed and recorded by world class soloists, ensembles and orchestras at festivals and venues all over the world.

Carjez GERRETSEN, Born on 31 of January 1984 in Groningen (Netherlands)he was a pupil of Michel Lethiec in Nice  conservatory before being accepted in Lyon CNSM ( Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique )in Jacques Di Donato’s class.

Selected in 2005 to integrate the “Orchestre Francais des Jeunes” under Jean-Claude Casadesus directionand the World Youth Orchestra for a tour via Rome, New york and Slovenia, his various meetings during his studies brings him to open his artististic mind.

He discovered the world of Theater by acting and playing in the play “l’ histoire vraie de la périchole” set directed by Julie Brochen at the Festival international d’art lyrique d’Aix en Provence in 2006, as in ” la cerisaie” of Tcheckov in 2010. Since then, he is definitely attracted by original projects(with ensembles like Variances,Justiniana, Virévolte, etc…  ).

In 2009, he won the third prize of the “Crusell” international clarinet competition and in 2012 the third prize at the International Clarinet competition of Freiburg in Germany wich brings him to play often in soloist with orchestras like “i virtuosi di Kuhmo”, l’Orchestre Régional de Cannes, the CIC chamber orchestra, Paris Mozart Orchestra, Orchestre de Chambre de la Nouvelle Europe,…
