David, a musician from Marseille, settles in Paris, and shares his apartment with an unknown: Anne, who runs a photography workshop. He falls in love with a student to whom he gives private lessons: Julia, bourgeois and haughty. On paper, Change of Address reproduces the framework of a Hollywood comedy drama. The hero and his roomie opt a little fast for a friendly relationship and tell each other their love trials and tribulations, as if they were on a neutral ground, but…

Emmanuel Mouret knows how to serve this sentimental suspense, but he also manages to lead his characters towards absurd. His actors excel in this alternation between psychology and unreasonableness. But the film has also its more disenchanted part. Many new developments force the characters to some inglorious extreme actions, while the spreading of the story over many years reveals their dark side and the bad habits they are taking. Between comedy drama and burlesque, the cinema of Emmanuel Mouret is unique in the landscape of the French cinematographic production, and Change of Address is a perfect introduction to it.
