On the occasion of Francophonie Week, Alliance Française de Delhi in collaboration with the Embassy of Switzerland, present Jazz Concert by French Swiss vocalist, Sylvie Bourban with Mattias Windemo on the Acoustics.
Born in Switzerland, Sylvie Bourban grew up singing in different choirs. At the age of sixteen, she was already a soloist in the village choir and performed regularly in a piano bar. Meanwhile, she attended the conservatory where she studied classical piano and music theory. At the age of eighteen, she moved to Lausanne, where she studied vocal technique, at the Jazz school, EJMA, until she won a scholarship from the prestigious Berkley College of Music in Boston.
While in Boston, Sylvie Bourban immersed herself in Jazz, Instrumental music for vocalist, Latin and Brazilian music and studied composition. In 2008, she received a Diploma with a Major in Professional Music, Summa Cum Laude, Berkley College of Music, Boston, MA.
Sylvie likes challenges, incongruous languages and composition. She completed songwriting studies in one of the world’s most renowned Jazz and current music school. There, for 3 years, she studied composers in the styles of: Latin music, Brazilian music and jazz. She composed numerous music pieces for different instrumentation, from solo pieces to orchestral pieces.
Between the year 2009 and 2010, she composed, produced and interpreted 3 CDs. In April 2012, her new work “aussi pour les petits” was released under the artistic production work of Magda Giannikou and the arrangements of Juan Andrés Ospina.
Sylvie co-produced with the association of the “Belle Usine” (Fully), a live recording of a CD and a residence at the Belle Usine, in June 2012. This new creation showcases her compositions as well as improvised music. The musicians, Mattias Windemo and Marcel Papaux, participated in this musical experience. The CD was released at the end of 2012. Sylvie has to her credit several recordings with musicians from Switzerland, USA, Sweden, Colombia, Chili, Israel, Japan, Mexico, England and Greece.
Sylvie’s style is very much unique. She has been inspired by the knowledge of her teachers, John Medeski, Cyro Baptista, Billy Martin, Chris Wood, Jamey Haddad, Hal Crook, Bob Stoloff, Dominique Eade, Fernando Brandao, Kenwood Dennard, Lisa Thorson and through workshops, with Bobby McFerrin, Rosa Passos and Bill Frisell among others. Her inspiration shines through many genres. She found a way to build her own sound and style, blending with a disconcerting ease all her different influences, with always the same unique ingredient, her sensitivity and love of interaction among musicians.
Guitarist Mattias Windemo was born in Sandviken in the north of Sweden in 1970. At the age of fifteen he became a student at the prestigious Swedish music school of Ingesund in Arvika. Two years later he became one of the youngest ever students at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. Since then he has been in great demand, established as a guitarist in variety musical contexts. Mattias and the guitar maker Jan Helg`e together created a special built twin neck guitar in 1990. This custom-made instrument is tuned in quarters with scalloped fingerboards allowing it to be played with one hand on each guitar neck, much in the way a keyboard is played.
The result is previously unheard of dimensions of music and unique possibilities of expression.
This makes Mattias internationally a “one-of-a-kind” guitar player who continually develops and explores his own music. Mattias Windemo has cooperated with musicians as Lindha Svantesson, Joakim Milder, Gösta Rundqvist, Karin Krogh, Mats Öberg and many more.
