Marie_15_Glade-1_2013‘Inner Terrains’ shows a body of work created over the last four years, drawings in ink and mixed media on paper using Japanese brush-pens, fine artist pens and pastel. They are greatly inspired by the organic and evocative patterns in nature – entangled roots and branches, sea, sand and cliffs. Some works draw from memories of childhood and emotional experiences like birth and death. The visual language expresses a balance between freedom and control. So the initial free and fluid brush strokes of the composition develop into a complex layered textural image. The textural quality of the work reflects her early training in etching in Paris. In other drawings her experience over the decades as a painter also surface.

Marie Dias Arora began her studies in painting from the JJ School of Art, Mumbai (1963-64) and graduated from the Delhi College of Art in 1968. She was awarded the French Government scholarship to train under master printmakers William Hayter and Krishna Reddy at ‘Atelier Seventeen’ in Paris (1969-72). She has held solo shows of her etchings at the Cite des Arts, Paris, Academy of Fine Arts, Calcutta and Alliance Française de Delhi. Her paintings have been exhibited in many Lalit Kala National Exhibitions of Art and she received the  AIFACS National Painting Award in 1978. She also taught art at Modern School, Vasant Vihar from 1975 to 2003 and has participated in several group exhibitions and art camps. Her work is in institutional and private collections in India and abroad. She lives and works in Delhi.
