Les Demoiselles de Rochefort

5.30 & 7.30 pm

Director: Jacques Demy

1967, 120 min

Solange teaches music theory and Delphine, her twin sister, gives dance lessons. They are waiting for true love, just like Maxence, painter and sailor, and Andrew Miller, an American composer, and Simon Dame, music goods dealer, and Yvonne, their mother, who runs a café on the main square of Rochefort.

From the very first picture, Jacques Demy shows the path to paradise: to berth on the Treasure Island named Rochefort, get onto the transfer bridge, and let yourself slip into the sea air. Your life will be transformed. Look at the effects of this travel on the procession of bikers on the road, during the generic. Standing on this cable-car of the seas, each one is stretching, to extricate themselves from a lethargic sleep. And then, little by little, yawns disappear behind smiles, cracks of legs become leaps, humming motors stop to let us listen to the sound of a cheerful piano.

From a basic framework (the search of soul mate), Jacques Demy has created a unique world, halfway between his memories of provincial dreamer and the fantasy of fairy tales.

But watch out! After seeing this film, you may dance on sidewalks, singing in face of passers-by, and talking into poetry with the greatest naturalness…
