In thirty five years, Footsbarn has produced nearly 60 plays, travelled to six Continents and is a truly multi-national group. The actors possess a multiplicity of talents and draw on varied theatrical traditions offering a truly enriched viewing experience.Alliance française de Delhi in association with the Embassy of France, Aircel and Air India, are proud to host their tour-de-force Victor Hugo’s ‘The Man Who Laughs’ at The Lotus Temple auditorium .

Set in England in the year 1690, the play tells the story of Gwynplaine, the son of an English nobleman who has offended the King. The monarch has sentenced the nobleman to death in a brutal iron maiden, after calling upon a surgeon, Dr. Hardquannone, to disfigure the boy’s face into a permanent rictus grin thus condemning him ‘to laugh forever at his fool of a father’. Eventually abandoned on the Cornish coast by Dr Hardquannone and his fellows ‘comprachicos’ (a sinister band of children-abductors), and his origins lost seemingly forever to the stormy seas, Gwynplaine’s story then folds into a carnivalesque journey around a magical kingdom peopled by tragic beauties and untold dramas…
