Rappeneau’s film is set in the heart of great historical change. The year is 1832 and a cholera epidemic is ravaging the south of France. Napoleon is dead and the French empire is crumbling. Austria, the new rising power, is poised to seize control over Italy. A young Italian officer is on a mission to save his country from this new threat. He meets a young noble lady whose husband is missing and, against the backdrop of a Europe in flames, the two join forces in an epic journey: a story from a forgotten time of chivalry in the incomparably beautiful Provencal landscape.
