Song and dance are integral to Hindi cinema, now usually known as ‘Bollywood’.  Much loved by audiences, the songs are one of many non-realistic features characteristic of these films. This richly illustrated lecture examines ways in which contemporary filmmakers seek new ways to incorporate songs and give them continued importance, juxtaposing this with the practices of the ‘golden era’

Rachel Dwyer is Professor of Indian Cultures and Cinema at SOAS, University of London.  She has published ten books, mostly on Indian cinema, and she is currently writing Bollywood’s India: Indian cinema as a guide to modern India for Reaktion Books. She edits two book series on South Asian cinema: one with Oxford University Press, Delhi, the other with Indiana University Press. Her current research interests include the emotions in Hindi cinema, and the cultural history of the Indian elephant.
