The World is Big se déroule dans un premier temps en Bulgarie, dans les années 1980. Dans une petite ville de province, l’ouvrier Vasil « Vasko » Georgiev a des problèmes avec l’agent local du parti communiste qui lui demande de lui rapporter les activités de son beau-père Bai Dan, accusé par les autorités de produire illégalement des plateaux de jeu de backgammon. Vasko décide alors d’émigrer au-delà du « rideau de fer » avec sa femme Yana et son fils Aleksander « Sashko ».
En 2007, nous retrouvons Sashko et ses parents en route vers la Bulgarie pour la première fois depuis leur émigration. Mais un grave accident de voiture intervient dans lequel Vasko et Yana décèdent. Sashko est emporté à l’hôpital, amnésique. Son grand-père Bai Dan décide d’aller à son secours en Allemagne. Il l’emmène de force hors de l’hôpital et l’entraîne dans un périple en tandem, vers la Bulgarie ainsi que vers son propre passé.
Le film a reçu plus de 20 récompenses lors de divers festivals et a intégré une première sélection de neufs films en compétition dans la catégorie « meilleur film étranger » de la 82ème cérémonie des Oscars.
The World is Big takes first place in Bulgaria during the 1980s. In a small provincial town the factory worker Vasil “Vasko” Georgiev has problems with the local communist agent who wants him to spy on his father-in-law Bai Dan’s, who is accused by the authorities as having an illegal business of producing backgammon sets. Vasko decides to emigrate beyond the Iron Curtain to Western Europe with his wife Yana and his son Aleksander “Sashko”.
In 2007, we see again Sashko and his parents on their way to Bulgaria for the first time after they have emigrated. But they suffer a severe car accident in which Vasko and Yana die. Sashko is taken to a hospital with amnesia. His grandfather Bai Dan decides to go to Germany and try to help Sashko restore his past. He forces him to leave the hospital and to start a journey on a tandem bicycle, that will take them back to Bulgaria and to Sashko’s past.
The movie received more than 20 festival awards and has been included in a first selection of nine movies for the Foreign Language Film category of the 82nd Academy Awards.
